Mars
Sustainable packaging: a world first for Mars Wrigley
Mars Wrigley was taking a bold leap for the future of the planet, and sustainable packaging design played a central role in this initiative. They pioneered a new recyclable paper-based packaging, with a plan to transition all their Aussie-made chocolate bars into it. That’s where Cowan came in, tasked with designing the packaging and bringing it to life in-store.
A sustainable solution
The iconic MARS BAR®, SNICKERS® and MILKY WAY® were all set to take on the new paper wrapping, so sustainable packaging design played a key role in ensuring the packaging struck a balance between communicating the change clearly and effectively without compromising the recognisability of these legendary brands.
With that, we crafted three packs that distinctly communicate a new, eco-friendly, recyclable paper wrapper – all while preserving the power of the bars’ iconic logos. The chocolates still look as tasty as ever, just with a little less guilt.
A happier planet
The impact of this seemingly-small change is colossal. Once the Aussie-made chocolate bar portfolio is fully transitioned, Mars Wrigley is set to eliminate more than 360 tonnes of plastic from its value chain – that’s enough to stretch from Melbourne to London and back. We’re proud to have been part of the solution – helping Mars Wrigley make the planet a greener place, one paper wrapper at a time.
